General pest control

Florida has always been one of the top tourist destinations in the United States. Unfortunately, people are not the only things visiting the Sunshine State. The warm weather and lush tropical setting are now home to two very dangerous creatures, the Black Widow and Brown Recluse Spiders.

Running into these pests is not only scary but can be deadly. The Brown Recluse bite is usually painless to start with. Within hours, the bite will become painful, red, and swollen. They usually will heal within three weeks, and most times do not require any further medical treatment. In other cases, the victim may develop a necrotic lesion, appearing as a dry, sinking bluish patch with irregular edges, a pale center and peripheral redness. Often there is a central blister. As the venom continues to destroy tissue, the wound may expand up to several inches over a period of days or weeks. The necrotic ulcer can persist for several months, leaving a deep scar.

There is good news if you can imagine a spider being on your good news. If you can avoid the urge to knock the arachnid off of you, chances are you will not get bitten. The Brown Recluse will not bite until it feels pressure on it. Even with that in mind, the threat should not be taken lightly. Few statistics on deaths attributed to spider bites are available. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, only two people died from spider bites between 2001 and 2005. Both were believed to be caused by Brown Recluse Spiders.

The more well known and feared of the spiders is the Black Widow. There are 4 species of Black Widow found in Florida. They are best known for their black bodies with red markings. They are not as easy going as the Brown Recluse. Black Widows build their webs between things like cups in a cupboard or cans in a pantry. If you should disturb the web, the widow will aggressively attack. Children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are, particularly at risk. The most common symptoms are intense pain, rigid abdominal muscles, muscle cramping, malaise, local sweating, nausea, vomiting and hypertension.
